[HOW TO] Install Silverlight Plugin in Xubuntu

In this article we'll learn how to install the Silverlight Plugin in Xubuntu (tested in Firefox and Xubuntu 14.04). We'll install Pipelight, which is a plugin that allows to view Silverlight videos in Ubuntu which is needed to use services as Netflix or MEO Go.

Install

Open a terminal window and run:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:pipelight/stable -y && sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install pipelight -y && sudo pipelight-plugin --update && sudo pipelight-plugin --enable silverlight && sudo pipelight-plugin --create-mozilla-plugins

Usage

Restarting your browser after installing and grant permission to run the plugin when the browser asks for it.

[NEWS] Ubuntu 13.10 Support Ended

The official support for Ubuntu 13.10, and its derivatives, ended July 17, 2014 (9 months after its release). So it will no longer receive system updates.

If you are still using Xubuntu 13.10 it's recommended that you upgrade to Xubuntu 14.04, which is long term supported.

Here I described how to upgrade from 12.10 to 13.04, but the instructions are the same to upgrade 13.10 to 14.04.

[NEWS] Xubuntu 14.04 released!

Xubuntu 14.04 Trusty Tahr has been released. It is a long-term-supported (LTS) release and will be supported for 3 years.

Here are the highlights of this release:

• Light Locker replaces xscreensaver for screen locking, a setting editing GUI is included
• The panel layout is updated, and now uses Whiskermenu as the default menu
• Mugshot is included to allow you to easily edit your personal preferences
• MenuLibre for menu editing, with full Xfce support, replaces Alacarte
• A community wallpapers package, which includes work from the five winners of the wallpaper contest
• GTK Theme Config to customize your desktop theme colors
• Updated artwork, including various enhancements to themes as well as a new default wallpaper

Xubuntu 14.04 released!

[NEWS] Ubuntu One has been discontinued

The Ubuntu One cloud syncing service will no longer be provided after 1 June 2014. Here's some quotes from their website:

We are sorry to notify you that we will be shutting down the Ubuntu One file services, effective 1 June 2014. It is no longer possible to purchase storage or music from the Ubuntu One store. The Ubuntu One file services apps in the Ubuntu, Google, and Apple stores have been removed. As always, your content belongs to you. If you have already uploaded any content you can simply download your files onto your PC or an external hard drive. While the service will stop as of 1 June, you will have an additional two months (until 31 July 2014) to collect all of your content. After that date, all remaining content will be deleted.

Customers who have an active annual subscription will have their unused fees refunded.

[NEWS] Xubuntu 14.04 Final Beta Released

Xubuntu 14.04 Beta 2 has been released and it is the last beta until the final LTS release.

[SOLVED] The following packages have been kept back

Problem

The message "The following packages have been kept back" appears when upgrading (apt-get upgrade), and the packages identified are not upgraded.

Solution

This happens when the dependencies of the identified packages changed and new packages need to be installed. We need to use dist-upgrade in order to install the new dependencies and upgrade the packages:

sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Install

Open a terminal window and run:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:langdalepl/gvfs-mtp -y && sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade -y

Reboot, to finish installation.
